I have to make 8 lesson plans (Language, Math, Social/Emotional, Science, Music, Creative Movement, Creative Art and Food Experience) for young children that all relate to my theme, "Under the Sea". Any good suggestions? It will be greatly appreciated!
I would go to the library and find a large collection of children’s picture books, non fiction and fiction about sea creatures.
Language: read aloud and free reading time from the pile of library books you found
Math: cut out fish shapes and use for counting games or memory match type games
Social/Emotional: Talk about why and how fish travel in "schools" Have the children act out fish grouping together and working together for protection, for companionship, and working together to find food.
Science: check out this site’s page http://www.easyfunschool.com/article1579.html
Music: Play the theme to the Little Mermaid
Creative Movement: Borrow or buy the new Imax movie "Under the Sea" and have the children imitate the movements of their favorite type of fish. The movie is probably too long to watch the whole thing without losing their attention, but you could show a segment or two. Replay the music from the movie or from Little Mermaid and have the children imitate the fish.
Creative Art: tear up colored paper and make large plain paper outlines of several different types of fish. Give each child a fish silhouette and a pile of colored paper scraps. Glue the papers onto the fish for a collage.
Food: sushi in class? (I’m joking!) You could bring in a wide variety of fish dishes and have the children try them. If that is not an option, maybe the local library has a collection of old food magazines. The kids could cut out pictures of different fish dishes, match them up with a picture of the type of fish used in the dish and stick them on a big poster.

What did teachers use before lesson plans were created? Are lesson plans a modern standard of education? Were they even used 40 or 50 years ago? Does anyone have any information regarding the history of lesson plans? Anything would be helpful, thank you!
I was at teachers’ college in Australia in 1969-70 (40 years ago). We had a semester unit of study on lesson plans which was linked to our practicum (prac teaching). We were shown many styles of lesson plans for introducing, practising, revising and testing a topic. Each lesson plan had a space for aims and objectives, an introductory activity, the main part of the lesson and the conclusion. There was also a space down the side for materials and equipment needed. At the end was a space for teacher reflection after the lesson. For the first three years I had to submit my lesson plans to the Principal! An inspector could ask to see them as well. As I became more experienced, I was allowed to use a much more truncated version in the form of a day book – maybe a few lines for each lesson. By that time much of the planning went on in my head. I suppose my lecturers were drawing on their own experience as well as theory. I don’t think someone sat down one day and said, "Eureka! I’ve invented lesson plans!"
I’m planning to give Spanish lessons this summer for a little extra money. Is there a site that will teach me how to write a good lesson plan and come up with fun activities to do? It’s not necessarily for little kids but I want the lessons to be enjoyable rather than just conjugating verbs and such. Thanks!
Why don’t you find a local public school teacher and see if they would be willing to talk with you. Since you didn’t say an age range. not much I can tell you here. You could also look up in Google, teaching ideas Spanish, or a variety of other search terms.
Since the lessons are so short, is writing out a detailed lesson plan necessary? What kind of planning do preschool teachers do? I mean, some planning MUST go into the day’s activities, but is it as formal as a lesson plan?
I do write daily lesson plans, and I suspect almost all preschool teachers do. I start by determining which education standards I want to address and what my main lesson/activity will be. Then I build the whole day around the standards I am addressing for that day. The entire day’s schedule and activities are planned out based on the standards and must be written out to the extent that a sub can step in and follow my plan if I should have to leave unexpectedly or become ill and cannot attend that day. I’m guessing that what you’re really asking is if I write out my main activity in the great detail that I did when writing lesson plans when I was in college, and the answer to that question is no, not in the same way. All of that information is there, but in a simpler format. It’s important to do all that when you’re in going to school though, to help you learn to understand and develop the thought process that goes into planning the day’s activities. Everything we plan for each day has an educational purpose. We have limited time with these kids, so we want every minute to be constructive, fun, and purposeful.

I know it sounds ridiculous (I feel that way too, seeing as how most of the time you can’t get them to stop biting each other or hitting lol) but, DHS here requires a developmentally appropriate lesson plan to be made each week. Art activities are simple, I need a basic theme(s). Any ideas would be helpful. Thank you.
