  • How to prepare for middle school volleyball tryouts?

Posted by admin on November 28th, 2009 and filed under middle school | 4 Comments »

What are some ways that I can prepare for middle school tryouts. I have a few months, but I really want to make it, so what can I do? Also, how much running do you have to do at tryouts?

this is my first year playing for my middle school and i would say you do a lot of conditioning so you aren’t out of breath on the court. my coach has us do drills and games and if we mess up or lose then we do running as consequences. It sounds meana and hard but its actually shes a good coach. That’s only practices though. at tryouts you do just as a warmup 2laps round the gym. and it depends on drills u do..not that much running. the coaches look for good passes and serves over the net.(the net and serving line are about 30ft apart). practice hitting the ball against a wall or sumthing that u would do that involves passing.

What are some good math games for a special education high school math class?

Posted by admin on November 28th, 2009 and filed under special education | 5 Comments »

It is Special Education and most of the students have learning disabilities. We are doing algebraic fractions with positive numbers. What can I do to help them learn and get them interested? I’d like to get them up and moving! The school is in an urban area and we have no access to computers.

Anything that you can do with food gets the kids interested. Of course you have to buy it yourself, but sometimes it is worth it. You can use the food to divide and make fraction problems. Maybe bake a cake (less expensive) and have them figure out how to cut it so there are enough pieces for everyone. That of course is a basic thing, but useful in everyday life. (And it is not expensive to bake your own cake).

As for games, you can make a simple board game on paper. Then make a set of problems and cut them apart and put them in envelopes. Have the kids play in small groups of 4. They can use coins or torn pieces of paper as markers. In order to move the # of spaces that they roll they have to get the answer right. Give candy to the winner; or a homework pass.

Fly swatter game; put several random answers on the board. Prepare problems ahead of time so that you have answers that will match them. Get 2 different colored fly swatters. Give a problem that they can solve in their head, or give them a section on each side of the board to work it out. The first person to swat the correct answer scores a point for their team. Remind them that they cannot hit each other, and that you are the sole judge in determining who was first. When it doubt call it a tie! Give candy to the winning team.

I have 6 rows in my class. Have them go up 1 member from each row. Give a problem. The first to solve it correctly gets a point and gets to try to make a basket (buy a basketball hoop and foam ball at the dollar store). It is really hard to make the baskets so I give 2 bonus points to the team if they make it. Give candy to the winning row. I have the kids work the problems at their seats too and hand it in. That way ALL are actively involved instead of just talking to each other and not paying attention.

Make a checker board with problems. In order to move to a spot they have to give the solution. If they are wrong then they cannot move there. Makes the game more interesting. I bought inexpensive bingo chips and keep them in plastic bags, sorted.

I have a whole list of ideas at school; this is all that I could come up with off the top of my head. I pull out my list when I need to come up with something new for my classes. Email me if you need more ideas.

    Hope these work for you!

One more; concentration on the overhead. Use sticky notes to cover them up; have problems on one side and solutions on the other. They have to match up the problem to the solution. If they are right their team gets a point.

I want to start giving Piano Lessons-What should I do?

Posted by admin on November 28th, 2009 and filed under piano lessons | 3 Comments »

I have been playing the piano for years and would love to start giving lessons ( and yes I went to school for Music Education-didn’t graduate but completed a 3 years) I have references I could use as well…..SO how do I get started, where are the best places to advertise?? I am in Oakland County, Mi so help me if you are knowledgable as to what I should do to start. Do I need to start my own business? So many questions help please.

Obviously you want to advertise that you are going to be giving piano lessons. Tell your friends and family. Word of mouth is the best form of advertising.

If there is a local restaurant or something that has a community boards, you may want to post flyers with your phone number advertising your piano lessons. Most management in these places would be willing to have that on their community board.

You may also want to consider trying to talk to the manager or owner at your local music shop that offers piano lessons. Let them know that you are offering piano lessons. If they are fully booked with students, you could easily get some referrals from them. I don’t know if it will work, but it doesn’t hurt to ask.

Hope this helps and good luck.

I need ideas for a lesson plan for 1st graders that involves plants and seeds.?

Posted by admin on November 28th, 2009 and filed under lesson plan | 8 Comments »

I have to use the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and incorporate technology with the lesson. I am planning on using a PowerPoint.
Any ideas, lessons, anything will help??? I am just about to enter student teaching.

The best lesson would include planting the seeds. Beans and peas sprout pretty quickly, especially if you soak them a couple hours before planting. Hands on. You can watch them and measure their growth.

what is the difference between a private school and a montessori school?

Posted by admin on November 28th, 2009 and filed under private school | 5 Comments »

i’m in high scho0l and i’m planning to switch schools and i want to know what the difference between a private school and a montessori school really is, and should i consider going to a montessori school or a private school? and where can i find the rankings for the leading montessori schools in toronto, ontario?

    -thank you

A montessori school is a private school, so perhaps you’re asking how a montessori school is different from other private schools.

First of all, montessori is a teaching method and is generally done for small children ages 3 to 7 – at least here where I live. I’ve never heard of a montessori high school.

    Here’s something from www.montessori.edu

    Q. What is the difference between Montessori and traditional education?

    A. Montessori emphasizes learning through all five senses, not just through listening, watching, or reading. Children in Montessori classes learn at their own, individual pace and according to their own choice of activities from hundreds of possibilities. Learning is an exciting process of discovery, leading to concentration, motivation, self-discipline, and a love of learning. Montessori classes place children in three-year age groups (3-6, 6-9, 9-12, and so on), forming communities in which the older children spontaneously share their knowledge with the younger ones. Montessori represents an entirely different approach to education.

What are the best family neighborhoods and elementary schools within 10 miles of TCU (Fort Worth, Texas)?

My husband just got a job at TCU and we are looking for a good family neighborhood. Can someone recommend some good family neighborhoods? We have young children, so good elementary school recommendations would be great also.

Here is a link to the Great Schools website that rates individual schools. I’ve set the search engine to Fort Worth Elementary schools starting with the best rated and declining. You can also read parent’s reviews on this website. The first school on the list is Tanglewood Elementary and is rated 10 by the Best Schools website. Tanglewood is 1 or 2 minutes from TCU. I’ve driven through the neighborhood and it’s beautiful. The problem is, you may have a hard time finding a house available in that neighborhood.
